6 popular stress-relieving remedies loved worldwide

People around the world have different ways of relieving stress, such as immersing themselves in nature, self-massage, sauna, or simply enjoying the feeling of doing nothing. Stress can have negative effects on physical and mental health, and various forms of relaxation have been shown to reduce the risk of chronic health problems, restore energy, and improve self-esteem.

In Japan, the practice of “forest bathing” or shinrin-yoku involves walking in the woods to improve sleep quality, mood, and immunity. This practice helps calm the nervous and endocrine systems by opening people’s five senses to the natural world. Breathing in phytoncides released by forest plants also helps fight bacteria and stimulate disease-fighting white blood cells.

In India, self-massage with essential oils before bathing is a common practice rooted in Ayurveda, the ancient Hindu system of medicine. This form of therapy helps reduce stress and anxiety, improve concentration, and support the body’s natural circadian rhythm. The massage involves clockwise movements from the head down to the stomach, followed by a rest and shower.

Finns have a deep-rooted sauna culture, with about 90% of the population using saunas at least once a week. Sweating in a sauna has been shown to improve blood pressure, increase endorphins, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and dementia. Alternating between sauna sessions and cool swims or baths is recommended.

In Mexico, the Temazcal ritual is an ancient practice involving a sauna made of mud or honeycomb where participants meditate, chant, and release pent-up emotions. This ritual helps cleanse the body of toxins and impurities, forcing participants to reflect inwardly and evoke deep memories and emotions.

Norwegians embrace the concept of friluftsliv, which involves immersing oneself in nature in all kinds of weather. Spending time in nature has been shown to lower blood pressure, improve mental health, and boost morale, self-efficacy, and cognitive performance.

Italians prioritize enjoying the simple pleasures of life, taking time each day to savor moments with family and friends, often at outdoor cafes. This leisurely approach to life helps Italians find happiness, positivity, and meaning in everyday experiences.
