The donations are intended to support the family of the killed police officer, Rouven L. The Alliance of the Blumberg Evidence Preservation and Arrest Unit, a group formed by federal police officers, initiated the fundraising campaign shortly after the incident. The alliance was established after a fatal helicopter collision in Berlin in 2013 to provide assistance to affected colleagues.
Rouven L. was attacked on May 31st on the Mannheim market square by Sulaiman A., a 25-year-old Afghan, and succumbed to his injuries.
