7 methods to alleviate menopausal discomfort

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and protein, along with a reduction in sweets and processed foods, can help women reduce unpleasant symptoms of menopause. Menopause typically begins in the late 40s or early 50s, and during this period, women may experience hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, irritability, and fatigue. Postmenopausal women are at higher risk of certain diseases such as osteoporosis, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. A balanced diet plays a significant role in reducing these symptoms and risks.

Hormonal changes during menopause can weaken bones, increasing the risk of osteoporosis. Consuming foods rich in calcium and vitamin D is essential to prevent this condition. Calcium-rich foods include dairy products, green leafy vegetables, beans, sardines, and more. Sun exposure is also important for the production of vitamin D. Additionally, increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables can help reduce and prevent some menopausal symptoms, control cholesterol and blood pressure, and aid in weight management.

Another important aspect of a menopause-friendly diet is incorporating foods high in phytoestrogens, natural plant compounds that have similar effects to estrogen in the body. These compounds help balance hormones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and alleviating hot flashes and night sweats. Drinking an adequate amount of water each day can help combat dry skin, a common symptom of menopause, and prevent bloating. It is also crucial to reduce intake of sugar and processed foods, as they can worsen symptoms and affect bone health.

Maintaining regular eating patterns and ensuring meals are balanced and protein-rich can also have a positive impact on menopausal symptoms. Protein helps prevent the loss of lean muscle mass that occurs with age, aids in weight management, and enhances feelings of fullness. Incorporating protein-rich foods like meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts, and milk into the diet is important for postmenopausal women. Ultimately, adopting a varied and nutritious diet can significantly improve the overall health and well-being of women going through menopause.
