The Ministry of Health has reported that 81 people have been diagnosed with West Nile fever, with most cases concentrated in central Israel. The disease is caused by the bite of a mosquito infected with a specific virus, but it is not spread between people. Approximately 80% of those infected show no symptoms, while the remaining 20% may experience fever, headaches, and body pain. Neurological complications are rare but can occur, especially in vulnerable populations like the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
To reduce the risk of infection, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Health have issued instructions to the public. These include cleaning public sewers, removing stagnant water sources, and taking measures to prevent mosquito bites such as using repellents, wearing protective clothing, and installing screens on windows and doors. Additionally, people are encouraged to report mosquito breeding hazards to local authorities.
