During a WRIC NOW livestream, Stormtracker8 Meteorologist Matt DiNardo and WRIC Sports Director Nolan Knight discussed the future of sports coverage on Channel 8. Knight, a native Virginian, shared that his passion for sports started at an early age, recalling how he used to do play-by-play while playing video games like Madden or NCAA Football. He attributed his love for sports to being a three-sport athlete in high school, participating in various sports like volleyball, football, basketball, soccer, and track throughout his four years.
Before joining 8News, Knight was the Sports Director at WAAY in Huntsville, Alabama, where he extensively covered the Alabama Crimson Tide and Auburn Tigers. He was recognized by the Alabama Broadcasting Association for his high school football show “Big Game Friday Night”. Knight expressed his excitement about covering high school sports in Virginia, as he is already familiar with the schools and teams due to his background as a Virginia native.
Knight mentioned his eagerness to cover collegiate sports as well, highlighting teams like VCU basketball, Richmond football, and Virginia Union. He also mentioned the expectation of big seasons from universities in other parts of the state like Charlottesville and Blacksburg. Knight’s debut at 8News is set for Monday, June 24, during the 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. broadcasts. Viewers can catch more livestream content on the WRIC NOW page.
