A 19-year-old young man in Phu-Tho experienced pain in his legs but did not seek medical attention. As time passed, his condition worsened, leading to paralysis of both legs and loss of movement and feeling. Upon examination on April 3, Dr. Vi Truong Son from Phu Tho General Hospital discovered an epidural tumor pressing on the patient’s spinal cord, causing the paralysis.

The surgeon successfully removed the tumor and decompressed the spinal cord, preventing any long-term effects on the patient. The pathology results revealed that the tumor was a benign schwannoma. With the removal of the tumor, the patient’s legs have started to recover feeling and movement. He is now undergoing rehabilitation exercises and physical therapy to regain the ability to walk normally.

Spinal cord tumors are typically benign, but when they grow large, they can compress the spinal cord and nerves, leading to weakness in the limbs. It is crucial for individuals experiencing symptoms such as back pain, limb weakness, or numbness to seek medical attention promptly for examination and treatment. This early intervention can help prevent serious consequences and improve the chances of full recovery.
