A fresh look at oral health as the foundation of overall well-being

When we talk about oral health, we often think about dental hygiene and having fresh breath. While these are crucial aspects, there is more to oral health than meets the eye. Research shows that maintaining a balanced oral microbiome is not only essential for dental health but also plays a significant role in one’s overall health and mental well-being.

For a long time, oral health has been somewhat overlooked when discussing well-being. While factors like sleep, exercise, nutrition, and stress management are commonly recognized as important for health, oral health has not received the same level of attention. However, recent studies and expert opinions have started to shift this mindset, with oral health now being considered one of the six pillars of health in lifestyle medicine.

Just like inadequate sleep, poor oral health can increase the risk of various health conditions such as metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and depression. Research indicates that oral infections can contribute to numerous physical illnesses and may even result in premature death. The balance of the oral microbiome plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health and impacts how the body responds to different diseases.

An imbalance in the oral microbiome, known as dysbiosis, can lead to a range of health issues, from dental problems to serious conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have shown a connection between dental infections and an increased risk of developing cancer, such as bowel cancer. Inflamed gums provide a direct gateway for bacteria to enter the body, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good oral health.

Jukka Meurman, a professor emeritus in oral and maxillofacial diseases, highlights the significance of oral health in both physical and mental well-being. While oral health is acknowledged in professional circles, there is still room for improvement in public awareness. This underscores the importance of viewing oral health as an integral part of overall health and taking steps to prioritize its maintenance.
