Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu has been placed on the injured list after suffering a sprained ankle while tripping down the dugout stairs during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park. This news was shared by manager Alex Cora during a recent appearance on WEEI’s Jones & Mego.

In response to Abreu’s injury, catcher Tyler Heineman was called up from Triple-A Worcester to fill the vacant roster spot. This marks another setback for the Red Sox, who have already seen several key players sidelined this season due to various injuries.

Abreu, who was having an impressive rookie season, was in the conversation for the American League Rookie of the Year award with a solid .272/.344/.485 slash line, 14 doubles, six homers, and 22 RBI in 53 games played. His absence adds to the growing list of injured players on the Red Sox roster, including shortstop Trevor Story, right-hander Garrett Whitlock, first baseman Triston Casas, outfielder Tyler O’Neill, designated hitter Masataka Yoshida, and second baseman Vaughn Grissom.

As a result of Abreu’s injury, Bobby Dalbec will step in as the starting right fielder for the Red Sox in their upcoming game against the Atlanta Braves. The game is scheduled to take place at Fenway Park with a first pitch set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
