Taraji P. Henson has always been vocal about the importance of mental wellness. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the Color Purple actress discussed her new children’s book, You Can Be a Good Friend (No Matter What!), and how mental wellness is important to her. Henson, who works in mental health advocacy, emphasized the need to meet people where they are and help make the journey of life easier for everyone.

The 53-year-old actress has been an advocate for mental wellness for quite some time. She co-founded the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation in 2018 in honor of her father, a Vietnam War veteran, who passed away in 2005. Henson not only advocates for mental health in her personal life but also incorporates it into her acting career. She shared with PEOPLE that she always considers her character’s mental state while portraying them on screen. Her advocacy has changed the way she approaches her work, as she believes that every character has a hidden struggle affecting their mental health.

In an interview with Verywell Mind, she highlighted the significance of vulnerability and asking for help when needed, especially in dealing with trauma. Finding accessible resources and support systems has been crucial in her journey as a parent to her son Marcell, 30.

Overall, Henson’s book, You Can Be a Good Friend (No Matter What!), aims to spread awareness about mental wellness among children. The book is currently available for purchase and continues to advocate for open conversation surrounding mental health.
