Advances in Fonon AM Technology Propelling the Naval Industry Forward

Fonon Corp., a multi-market holding company, is known for its research and development center, equipment design, and manufacturing of advanced laser material processing systems for both subtractive and additive manufacturing. One of their innovative technologies, known as Bulk-To-Shape (BTS) additive manufacturing/3D metal printing, is currently in development for potential use in the naval industry. While this technology has not yet been fully commercialized, it has the potential to revolutionize the way naval operators produce parts, components, and tools on demand.

The BTS systems being developed by Fonon will allow naval operators to recycle obsolete parts or raw materials into fully functional components. This will enable expedited repairs for essential machinery while at sea, leading to continued operation or even “limp home” capabilities in emergency situations. This technology will be valuable for a wide range of vessels, including small craft, warships, and submarines, as it will ensure continuous operation without the need for shore-based resupply or returning to port.

By using BTS systems aboard ships, naval operators can benefit from critical spare parts being readily available through additive manufacturing technology. Examples of components that can be 3D printed on demand include handles, pump housings, tools, and pressure fittings. This capability offers significant logistical advantages for nations that can effectively utilize BTS technology in a marine environment.

Fonon’s BTS system will utilize a combination of conventional laser additive manufacturing and original metal powder production to recreate three-dimensional models. Their 3D laser metal printing systems will employ a digitally-driven additive manufacturing process that fuses metal powder into high-quality 3D objects using focused laser energy. This technology will allow for the production of parts and metal prototypes directly from a digital model and raw materials or used parts.

Overall, Fonon’s BTS systems will empower users to optimize existing part designs for enhanced performance and reliability while minimizing material waste. This innovative technology has the potential to transform the naval industry by providing a solution for on-demand manufacturing of critical components.
