The Mexican Space Agency (AEM) has continued its support for the State of Guerrero by providing training in the use of satellite technologies to assist the state in preparing for hurricanes. Salvador Landeros Ayala, the general director of AEM, emphasized the importance of satellite technologies in all aspects of disaster management, from prevention to reconstruction. The agency has trained a team to operate the “Early Warning and Humanitarian Aid System for the State of Guerrero” as part of the Guerrero in Space project.
Participants in the training received instruction on Remote Sensing and Earth Observation Programs, as well as how to download, visualize, and process optical and radar satellite images using specialized software like Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) and Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS). Representatives from the Guerrero Council, the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection, and the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources of the Government of Guerrero took part in the training.
Additionally, academics from the Autonomous University of Guerrero (UAGro) and the National Technological Institute of Mexico, Acapulco Campus (TecNMx) were involved in the training. This training complements a previous course given by AEM in collaboration with the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, where specialists were trained in satellite integration with the goal of developing the First Guerrero Nanosatellite, AtlaCom-1. The support provided by AEM and other institutions will enhance Guerrero’s capabilities in using satellite technologies for disaster preparedness and response.
