Discount retailer Bob’s Stores is closing its brick-and-mortar locations after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This closure includes the New Jersey location, as well as all 21 remaining stores, which will be shut down permanently and liquidated in the coming weeks.

In a press release, Bob’s Stores president Dave Barton expressed regret over the financial position that led to the liquidation. The chain has been a staple in local communities for nearly 70 years, with customers recalling the store being a part of major moments in their lives. Bob’s has locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

The New Jersey location closing soon is at 3710 US-9 in Freehold, with several other stores set to close in the next few weeks across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island. All stores are offering discounts of 30-70% off on items as part of a “Going Out of Business Sale.”

Originally known as “Bob’s Surplus,” the chain started in Connecticut in 1954 before TJX acquired it in 2003. It was later sold by TJX to private equity firms and eventually to the GoDigital Media group in 2022. Bob’s Stores joins other major retail chains in closing locations, such as Red Lobster and Rite Aid.
