The Chamber of Progress, a lobbying group focused on artificial intelligence, has launched a new public relations campaign called Generate and Create. The campaign aims to highlight the positive impact of AI on artistic endeavors and to counter legal and policy copyright threats facing generative artificial intelligence. The initiative showcases how artists incorporate AI into their creative processes to enhance their work.

Members of the Chamber of Progress include leading technology companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Intuit, and Meta. The campaign emphasizes five core principles, including the belief that generative AI benefits creativity and reduces barriers to producing art. One controversial aspect of the campaign is the assertion that generative AI should be protected under fair use provisions of copyright law and that extending copyright protection to styles or ideas could hinder the creative process.

Generate and Create was launched in response to recent controversies surrounding AI technology. For example, OpenAI faced backlash for its personal assistant voice, Sky, which was accused of mimicking actress Scarlett Johansson. The campaign also addresses ongoing legal challenges against OpenAI for alleged copyright infringement by authors and newspapers.

As part of the campaign, a mascot named Arty Fish was created using the AI program Midjourney, and a song titled “Arty Fish” was generated by the text-to-music AI system, Suno. The lyrics of the song encourage listeners to explore their creativity and let their ideas flow freely. Generate and Create aims to promote a more positive perception of AI in the arts and protect the rights of artists using generative AI technology.
