A new option is available for people in downtown Aiken who are in need of gas for their cars. Atul Patel recently opened the Aiken Travel Center at the intersection of Richland Avenue and Beaufort Street. The center includes a BP gas station, Bapa’s Food Mart, and a liquor and beer store. Patel explained that “Bapa” is a term used in India similar to “Papa” in the United States. He also mentioned that he is the owner and operator of Mo’s Discount Tobacco, located nearby, and plans to provide the same level of customer service at the new store.

Inside the store, above the food counter, there is a quote from Hindu guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj which states, “In the joy of others, we find our own.” Patel shared that this quote is a reminder of his commitment to excellent customer service. The Aiken City Council unanimously approved the construction of the store through an ordinance passed on April 15, 2019. The ordinance involved rezoning the four-acre property located between Richland Avenue, Beaufort Street, Gaston Road, and Barnwell Avenue from Industrial to General Business. Records show that Patel purchased the property for $360,000 from Prothro Rental Properties on November 28, 2018, through his corporation, Tulsiraj Inc.

After the purchase, the property was divided into two separate areas. The southern two acres now house the gas station, convenience store, and liquor store, while the development plans for the northern two acres have not yet been submitted or approved by the city council. In order to move forward with the development of the northern property, a concept plan will need to be presented and approved by the city.
