State and local officials gathered in Mobile to unveil the new Dr. Edward O. Wilson Science Research Center at the Alabama School of Math and Science campus. Named after the famous Alabama native who discovered the first colony of non-native fire ants in Mobile, this is the only college-level research facility for high schoolers in the state.
The new 32,000 square foot building is a significant upgrade from the school’s old facilities, which were housed in an old Baptist church and a former Sunday school. ASMS President Dr. John Hoyle expressed his excitement about the transformative impact the new building will have on their research capabilities. With teachers holding PhDs, the facility will provide students with opportunities to engage in high-level research projects.
The construction of the Dr. Edward O. Wilson Science Research Center cost around $15 million, with $6 million funded by the state. The remaining amount was raised through tax credits and private fundraising efforts. ASMS is a public school that is open to all high school students in Alabama who wish to apply, offering a high-quality education with a focus on science and research.
