All About Milk and Its Products at Shavuot 2024

In recent decades, there has been a shift in the perception of the health benefits of milk and its products. While in the past, there was no doubt about their nutritional value, today opinions are more varied. Some believe that milk consumption is not beneficial to human health, and concerns about environmental quality have also contributed to a decrease in its popularity. Although meat and its products are often in the spotlight, awareness of the impact of milk and dairy products is increasing.

During the festival of Shavuot, common questions arise about the effects of dairy products on digestive problems such as bloating, gas, or diarrhea. Understanding the difference between a milk allergy and lactose intolerance is crucial. Lactose intolerance occurs when the body lacks the enzyme lactase needed to break down milk sugar. Symptoms of a milk allergy can include rash, swelling, nausea, and abdominal pain.

Nutritional studies have shown that some individuals with lactose intolerance can tolerate small amounts of milk throughout the day. Consuming low-lactose dairy products like cheese and yogurt, as well as lactose-free milk, can help improve tolerance. Some people find relief using lactase enzyme supplements before consuming milk. Consulting a doctor for a proper diagnosis is important when experiencing symptoms of lactose intolerance.

The connection between milk consumption and phlegm is a topic of debate. According to Chinese medicine principles, dairy products, especially skim milk, can lead to increased phlegm production. Scientific evidence on this is inconclusive, with some studies suggesting that milk may affect mucus thickness but not necessarily volume. A meta-analysis in 2019 found insufficient evidence to support avoiding dairy products to reduce phlegm.

Plant-based milk substitutes like almond, soy, and oat drinks have gained popularity as alternatives to dairy. While they may be suitable for those with allergies or intolerances, it’s important to note that these substitutes may have lower protein and calcium content. Reading nutrition labels and choosing fortified options can help ensure adequate nutrient intake. Some plant-based drinks may also contain added sugars, so opt for sugar-free varieties.

It’s recommended for adults to consume two to three servings of dairy products per day to meet calcium needs. Dairy products are an excellent source of calcium, crucial for bone and teeth health. Alternatives like fish with bones, legumes, and green vegetables can also provide calcium. Ultimately, there is no need to fear dairy products when consumed in moderation and as part of a balanced diet. Consult a dietitian for personalized recommendations based on individual needs and preferences.
