Alvarez leads Argentina to quarter-final of Copa America

Julian Alvarez played a key role in helping Argentina secure a spot in the Copa America quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Chile at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The win ensured that the world champions would finish at the top of Group A and advance to the next round with a game to spare, after previously defeating Canada.

In the match against Chile, it was Inter’s Lautaro Martinez who scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute. Despite dominating the game with 59% possession and 22 goal attempts, Argentina only managed to score one goal, with an expected goal (xG) of 2.87. Alvarez, playing alongside Lionel Messi in attack, played a crucial role in creating space for his teammates and offering an option in behind the opposition defense.

Alvarez, who had scored in the previous match against Canada, had a chance to add to his tally in the game against Chile. However, his left-footed shot from close range was saved by Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. Argentina will now face Peru in their final group stage match before moving on to the quarter-finals of the tournament.
