Amazon abandons ‘Just Walk Out’ technology due to ongoing problems

Apr 3, 2024

Amazon has made the decision to remove its “Just Walk Out” technology from its Fresh grocery stores across the United States due to a variety of issues that have plagued the self-checkout system. This decision comes after reports of problems with the system, which includes a multitude of cameras, sensors, and 1,000 human eyeballs to function properly.

The Just Walk Out system was intended to offer a more automated way of shopping for consumers, allowing them to simply walk into the store, grab what they need, pay for it at a counter without a cashier, and then leave. During this process, consumers are constantly scanned by sensors and cameras positioned around the store. Despite being touted as a cashier-less system, reports indicate that more than 1,000 real people in India were scanning the camera feeds to ensure that all patrons were accurately checking out.

The technology also presented challenges for Amazon in the legal department, as a class action suit in New York accused the company of collecting biometric identifier information without properly disclosing the practices to consumers, a violation of the state’s Biometric Identifier Information Law.

Due to these issues and more, Amazon has decided to remove the Just Walk Out technology from its Fresh grocery stores, which were only present in half of the total amount of Amazon Fresh stores in the US.
