Amazon discontinuing ‘Just Walk Out’ technology in grocery stores

Apr 3, 2024

Amazon has decided to discontinue its “Just Walk Out” self-service technology at Amazon Fresh stores in the United States. This technology allowed customers to grab items and leave without waiting in a checkout line by tracking their selections with sensors and cameras.

The company informed The Hill that they will be replacing the technology with the “Amazon Dash Cart,” which offers a similar concept but with added features. Shoppers can still grab items, scan them, and place them directly in their carts to skip the checkout line and pay automatically.

Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin stated that the company has been redesigning Amazon Fresh stores over the past year to enhance the overall shopping experience with more value, convenience, and selection based on customer feedback. The decision to transition to the Amazon Dash Cart was made to provide customers with additional benefits such as finding nearby products, viewing receipts, and tracking savings while shopping.

According to The Information, Amazon will only be removing “Just Walk Out” at Amazon Fresh stores, while continuing to use this technology at Amazon Go stores and smaller Amazon Fresh locations in the U.K. The first cashier-less physical grocery store outside the U.S. was opened by Amazon in London in 2021.
