Amazon is implementing changes in its Amazon Fresh stores, including removing the Just Walk Out technology from its Oceanside location. The company is revamping its grocery chain and introducing smart carts that allow customers to skip the checkout line while also providing real-time spending updates and receipts.

In response to customer feedback about wanting to view receipts and savings while shopping, Amazon spokesperson Carly Golden stated that the smart carts will offer these benefits along with the convenience of skipping the checkout line. The decision to remove Just Walk Out technology was reported by The Information and affects 27 out of 44 Fresh stores across the country.

The Oceanside store, which opened in July 2022, is the only Fresh supermarket in New York state and is located in a former Waldbaum’s supermarket space. Amazon also operates Amazon Go cashier-free convenience stores and owns Whole Foods. Despite initial predictions that Amazon’s entry into the grocery sector would disrupt the market, the company has faced challenges in finding successful strategies.

In a letter to shareholders in 2023, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged the need to find the right formula to make a larger impact in the physical grocery sector. Amazon has shut down underperforming stores and paused expansion plans while focusing on selectively opening new Fresh stores and remodeling existing ones. Just Walk Out technology will still be available in Amazon Go stores and select smaller Amazon Fresh locations in the U.K., as well as offered to third-party retailers.
