A 102-year-old World War veteran from the USA passed away while on his trip to the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy. The veterans’ association Honor Flight announced on Facebook that Robert Persichitti had flown across the Atlantic with a nurse. During a sailing tour along the French coast, he experienced a medical emergency. Persichitti was then flown to Germany, where he passed away shortly afterwards on May 31. Persichitti had been inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame in 2020 for his service as a radio operator on board the USS Eldorado during World War II.

On Sunday, a Canadian World War II veteran died one day before his planned trip to the commemoration. William Cameron, who operated an anti-aircraft gun on a corvette during the Allied landings on D-Day, passed away at the age of 100. Around 180 US veterans participated in the commemorations of the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944 on Thursday.
