An AI chatbot designed as a drag queen provides guidance and information on HIV and STIs

A young Black gay patient in a southern state reached out to an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot a few months ago, expressing struggles with his relationship with sex. He felt comfortable discussing this sensitive topic through the chatbot, knowing he would receive an immediate response without judgment. The chatbot reassured him that he was not alone in his feelings and directed him to a professional for further assistance.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, a nonprofit organization providing sexual health and HIV care in 15 states, developed the chatbot to offer confidential support to patients. The chatbot serves as a resource for educational information on sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) and can help manage appointments, deliver test results, and provide support to underserved patients who are vulnerable to infections like HIV. To engage patients in a unique way, the foundation decided to have the chatbot communicate in the voice of a drag queen.

This innovative approach to patient engagement aims to make medical information more accessible and relatable to diverse populations. The chatbot’s use of a drag queen persona creates a welcoming and nonjudgmental environment for patients to discuss sensitive issues related to sexual health. By incorporating elements of drag culture, the chatbot provides a safe space for patients to seek guidance and support in a way that celebrates their individuality and encourages open communication.
