This year’s edition of the World Energy Investment report provides updated information on investments in the energy sector for 2023 and offers a preliminary analysis for 2024. The report serves as a global benchmark for tracking capital flows in the energy industry and examines how investors are evaluating risks and opportunities in various areas such as fuel, electricity supply, critical minerals, efficiency, research and development, and energy finance.

Several key aspects of the current investment landscape are highlighted in the report, including ongoing pressures on costs and interest rates, new industrial strategies implemented by major economies to promote clean energy manufacturing, and policies that encourage clean energy spending. These policies are increasingly focusing on energy security and affordability.

The report expands its analysis on the sources of investment and finance in the energy sector, providing new insights on the involvement of development finance institutions in energy projects in emerging and developing economies. It also compares investment trends in clean energy with those in fossil fuels and examines the geographical distribution of these investments.

Additionally, the report includes a new regional section that covers 10 major economies and regions. It also evaluates the additional efforts required to achieve the goals set out in COP28, which include transitioning away from fossil fuels, tripling renewable capacity, and doubling the rate of improvements in energy efficiency by 2030.
