Angel Reese, a rookie player with the Chicago Sky in the WNBA, has taken a step towards mogul status by becoming a part-owner of DC Power Football Club, Washington’s newest women’s professional soccer team. The team is set to begin its first season this summer as one of the founding teams in the USL Super League. Reese expressed her desire to support women’s sports and elevate female athletes, particularly in the DMV community.
Interestingly, becoming a part-owner of a professional sports team has become a status symbol among star athletes. Examples include Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany, part-owners of the Kansas City Current, and Tom Brady, who is involved with the Las Vegas Aces. Despite the trend of athletes investing in teams outside of their hometowns, Reese has chosen to invest close to home, being a Maryland native with deep connections to the D.C. area.
Reese’s involvement with DC Power FC as a founding investor, along with other prominent investors such as D.C. United and local community leaders, has been noted as groundbreaking. The franchise also revealed its first president, Jordan Stuart, its first head coach, Frédéric Brillant, and the team’s name on the same day as announcing Reese’s investment. Reese’s partnership with the team as an equity partner has been praised by Jason Levien, CEO and Co-Chairman of D.C. United, citing her passion for being a catalyst for positive change in women’s sports.
