Are additional fees being charged by the DMV for online transactions? | Investigating with Call Kurtis

The California DMV has expanded its digital services, allowing customers to take care of their business without having to visit a branch office. More than 90% of transactions can now be completed online using a phone, tablet, laptop, or computer. Services include renewing registration and driver’s licenses, requesting copies of registration and driving records, and replacing lost or stolen licenses. DMV Director Steve Gordon emphasized the agency’s commitment to providing quick and efficient service to customers, encouraging Californians to use the online platform to save time.

One Antelope resident, Charles, had a surprising experience while trying to conduct business online with the DMV this month. He encountered unexpected fees totaling over $70, including service fees, credit card fees, and mailing fees. CBS13 investigated and discovered that Charles had clicked on a sponsored link for a third-party site that charged additional fees to handle DMV transactions. It’s important for customers to use the official DMV website, dmv.ca.gov, to avoid unnecessary charges and ensure secure transactions.

CBS News consumer investigative reporter Kurtis Ming shared Charles’ story to raise awareness about the risks associated with using third-party websites to conduct official DMV business. Ming, an eleven-time Emmy Award-winner, provides valuable insights into consumer protection and online safety, urging viewers to always use the official DMV website for all transactions.
