Arlington County has implemented a new system to improve responses to individuals in a mental health crisis. The Marcus Alert System was established to provide a more effective response when 911 is called for help.
This system connects the 911 call center, regional crisis center, and law enforcement to offer better services and responses to individuals experiencing a mental health, substance abuse, or developmental disability crisis. The Marcus Alert System is also in operation in Prince William, Loudoun, and Fairfax Counties.
Named after Marcus-David Peters, a biology teacher, the Marcus Alert System aims to bridge the gap between behavioral health and criminal justice systems by providing equitable access to behavioral health resources for all individuals. A law passed in 2020 requires Virginia localities to establish protocols for enhanced responses to mental health calls.
Having undergone specialized training, emergency call takers are equipped to handle mental health and psychotic disorders and de-escalate crisis situations effectively. This training is crucial in ensuring a compassionate behavioral health response in these critical moments.
The goal of the Marcus Alert System is to direct individuals in crisis towards behavioral health responses instead of law enforcement. By 2028, all cities and towns in Virginia with more than 40,000 residents are required to have this system in place to better respond to individuals in mental health crises.
