As summer began: Thousands of Israelis succumbed to the “air conditioner flu”

At the beginning of summer, many Israelis have been experiencing flu-like symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, exhaustion, runny nose, muscle aches, and cough. This illness is believed to be caused by a combination of viruses and bacteria spreading in the community. Similar cases have been observed in the Western world in recent years, often referred to as “summer flu” or “air conditioner flu” due to its resemblance to the winter flu with digestive symptoms.

Reports from community doctors and emergency rooms in Israel have shown a significant number of people seeking treatment for these symptoms, with some requiring hospitalization for dehydration. This sickness affects individuals of all ages, including babies, children, young adults, and the elderly. Even soldiers have been affected by this wave of illness.

The spread of viruses and bacteria during the summer is thought to be related to the use of air conditioning in closed environments, which can decrease humidity and dry out mucous membranes, making it easier for pathogens to enter the body. To prevent infection, it is recommended to wash hands frequently, cover coughs with the elbow, ensure adequate ventilation in air-conditioned spaces, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.
