At Least 21 Dead in Dominican Republic Floods, Thousands Displaced

At least 21 people have died in the Dominican Republic after heavy rain over the weekend forced thousands from their homes, Dominican officials said on Monday, according to the BBC. Three children were among the dead and nine Dominicans died after heavy rain caused a landslide.

Dominican President Luis Abinader called it “the biggest rain event in the country’s history”, adding that classes in schools have been suspended until Wednesday to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

The rain, which is the result of a tropical cyclone, is expected to continue in parts of the country on Monday, the US Embassy said. Most of the 32 provinces in the country is still under red and yellow weather alerts, it added. Among the dead are four American citizens and three from neighboring Haiti, the AFP news agency reported.​
