At least four dead and 23 injured in train crash in the Czech Republic

A passenger train collided head-on with a freight train in the Czech Republic, resulting in at least four deaths and 23 injuries, officials reported Thursday. The crash occurred in Pardubice, about 100 kilometers east of Prague, on Wednesday night. The high-speed passenger train operated by RegioJet was heading towards Slovakia and Ukraine, while the freight train was carrying calcium carbide.

The Minister of Transport, Martin Kupka, stated that the main road between Prague and the eastern part of the country had to be closed for investigation. Czech Railways mentioned that the route where the crash occurred is a crucial one and is expected to remain closed for an extended period. More than 300 passengers were on board the train heading to Kosice in eastern Slovakia, though their nationalities have not been disclosed.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala described the crash as a great tragedy and extended condolences to the families of the victims. The Czech Republic is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the cause and prevent future accidents. The closure of the railway line is expected to have significant impacts on travel and transportation in the region.
