Athletes of the Year honored at Iowa High School Sports Awards

At the Iowa High School Sports Awards presented by SCHEELS, Derek Weisskopf from Williamsburg and Jaidyn Sellers from Panorama were honored as the Boys and Girls Athlete of the Year respectively. The event took place at Hoyt-Sherman Place in Des Moines and recognized over 250 Iowa student-athletes. SCHEELS sponsored the Boys and Girls Athlete of the Year awards. The other finalists for the Boys Athlete of the Year were Brevin Doll from ADM and Dreshaun Ross from Fort Dodge. The other finalists for the Girls Athlete of the Year were Addison Dorenkamp from Valley and Payton Petersen from Dike-New Hartford.

Weisskopf was recognized as one of the top football players in the state, and his talents have earned him a spot at the next level. With a long list of accolades including being named an ADIDAS All-American, Class 3A All-State Captain, District MVP, and invitations to the Shrine Bowl and Des Moines Register Elite Team, Weisskopf has proven himself as a standout athlete. He also excelled in basketball, earning all-conference honors and honorable mention all-state. In track and field, he was a state qualifier in the high jump, shot put, and discus, earning a silver medal. Weisskopf will be playing football for Iowa next year as a four-star recruit.

On the other hand, Sellers has showcased her skills across a variety of sports during her high school career. As the fastest sprinter in the state, she claimed the Class 1A state titles in the 100, 200, and 400 events, as well as placing third in the high jump. She accumulated a total of 10 state titles and three Drake Relay Titles throughout her career. In basketball, Sellers was named to the Class 2A first team by the Des Moines Register and led her team to a state championship. She will continue her athletic career in college as a softball outfielder for Iowa, where she has excelled as a first-team all-conference player and all-state honoree.
