Attitudes towards anti-Semitism and Israel in France during historic elections

France is currently experiencing tension as it approaches the snap parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday, marking a historic moment in French politics. Marine Le Pen’s far-right RN party is anticipated to become the largest party for the first time, potentially leading to Jordan Bardella becoming the next prime minister under President Emmanuel Macron.

Following the defeat of his party in the European Parliament elections, French President Emmanuel Macron dissolved parliament and called for snap elections. Polls indicate that Macron’s “Renaissance” party is expected to rank third, behind the far-right party and the union of left parties led by Jean-Luc Melanchon.

An election showdown occurred between party leaders Bardella and Manuel Bompard, with Prime Minister Gabriel Atal attacking their promises as unrealistic. Atal, associated with Macron, recently pledged a 15% reduction in electricity prices and a shift to four working days. Immigration and attitudes towards Israel play significant roles in the political discourse.

Jean-Luc Melanchon advocates for an inclusive immigration policy, while Atal takes a balanced approach focusing on regulation and integration. Bardella, on the other hand, supports strict immigration control to protect French interests. Melanchon has faced accusations of anti-Semitism for his views on Israel, while Atal prioritizes maintaining strong relations with Israel and supports a diplomatic solution.

Bardella, aligning with the “National Union” ideology, emphasizes support for Israel to combat extremism. His stance on Palestinian statehood rejects recognition as a form of rewarding terrorism. The upcoming elections are expected to reshape French politics and highlight crucial issues such as immigration and international relations.
