Austin Vosgraf and Tyler Fenton of Williamstown Named State Champions in Sports Event | Latest Headlines on News, Sports, and Jobs

Williamstown’s Austin Bosgraf had a memorable trip to the Class AA/A mountaintop, which culminated in his instant classic Saturday in his YMCA in the Kanawha Valley. He won the Class A singles state championship in a rematch of last year’s final against No. 1 seed Nick Giatris of Charleston Catholics. Bosgraf won 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 in an emotional match that saw him come back from a 3-0 deficit in the second set and overcome his opponent’s eight match points in the tiebreaker.

Bosgraf’s journey to the title match wasn’t easy, with a 10-4 victory over Winfield’s William Sinclair in the semi-final tiebreak. He also won the doubles tournament with Tyler Fenton, with whom he built an early 3-0 lead in both sets of the final. The Charleston Catholic duo of Theatrice and Conor Waveright fought back to take the second set, but Bosgraf and Fenton won 6-3, 3-6, 11-9, overcoming the pressure of a tiebreaker that lasted longer than usual.

On the women’s side, the tandem of Claire Stroble and Ashtin McIntyre represented Williamstown and reached the semi-finals against eventual champions Gillian Blevens and Courtney Curnutt. They lost 6-3, 6-2, but their efforts give head coach Diana Leo confidence in the future.

Overall, it was a successful outing for Williamstown’s tennis team, with Bosgraf winning two titles, Fenton winning one, and Stroble and McIntyre making it to the semi-finals. The team’s hard work and well-roundedness bode well for the future.
