Avoid these drinks if you have kidney disease

Beer, wine, and other alcoholic beverages, carbonated soft drinks, leaf juice, some fruit juices, milk, and strong tea can negatively affect the kidneys. The kidneys play a vital role in filtering blood, eliminating toxins and excess substances from the body, balancing electrolytes, regulating blood pressure, and maintaining blood pH. They also contribute to hematopoiesis and bone formation.

People with kidney disease need to carefully monitor their diet, including the types of drinks they consume. Dr. Cam Tu, Head of the Artificial Kidney Unit at Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, advises against consuming certain drinks for those with kidney disease.

Alcoholic beverages like beer and wine can strain the kidneys and lead to kidney function decline, potentially causing acute kidney failure. Carbonated soft drinks and sparkling water increase the risk of diabetes, overweight, obesity, high blood pressure, and kidney stones, which can progress to chronic kidney disease.

Energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine and sugar, putting additional pressure on the kidneys and potentially leading to kidney damage. Leaf juices from plants like squid grass, papaya leaves, and breadfruit can contain harmful toxins that strain the kidneys and liver.

Fruit juices rich in potassium, such as coconut water, mango, grapes, and bananas, may not be suitable for individuals with chronic kidney disease, as the kidneys may have difficulty filtering out excess potassium. Regular cow’s milk and nut milk consumption can also strain the kidneys due to their protein, potassium, and phosphorus content.

It is essential for individuals with kidney disease to consult a specialist to develop a suitable diet that supports overall health and kidney function. Avoiding certain types of plant juices, dietary supplements, and medications can prevent further kidney damage and slow down the progression of the disease.
