In Season 3, Episode 2 of The Bear, it is revealed that Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) will not be an official partner in the restaurant she and Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) are building. While it was assumed in the previous season that she would be a partner, Sydney learns that she will not be forgoing six months of her salary for nothing.
In the episode, Carmy informs Sydney that she will need to sign some paperwork to make her partnership official, which surprises Sydney. Edebiri explains that Sydney, like the audience, is unsure of what to believe when it comes to developing The Bear with Carmy, Natalie, and Uncle Jimmy. She is constantly trying to decode Carmy’s actions and understand his true intentions.
The actor mentions that Sydney’s journey of trying to understand Carmy’s gestures and communication style will be a central theme throughout the season. In Episode 6, Edebiri steps into the director’s chair and expresses her emotional reaction to the script, saying she was moved by the story and touched by being chosen to direct the episode.
