Babar delivers injury updates for crucial pair ahead of World Cup

Sep 15, 2023

Pakistan captain Babar Azam has not revealed whether Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, their leading pacers, are fit to start in the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The duo suffered minor injuries during a Super Four match against India in the Asia Cup. Consequently, they were unable to play in a recent tournament against Sri Lanka in Colombo. In their absence, Zaman Khan and Shahnawaz Dahani stepped in as substitutes and may be considered for a spot in the World Cup if Naseem and Rauf do not recover in time.

All teams participating in the six-week tournament must submit their squads to the ICC by September 28. Any changes to the final 15-player group can only be made with permission from the event organizers after that date. While Babar remains hopeful that Naseem and Rauf will recover before the World Cup, he did not elaborate on his contingency plans in case they miss the opening match against Netherlands on October 6. However, he did mention that Haris Rauf is not seriously injured and should recover in time for the tournament. Babar believes that Naseem Shah will also join the team later in the World Cup, but further assessment is needed.

Ahead of the World Cup, there are no official 50-over matches scheduled. However, there will be two warm-up matches against New Zealand on September 29 and Australia on October 3, although these matches do not carry official ODI status.
