Residents of Bangor, Maine can breathe easy knowing that their city is ranked among the best in the world for air quality in terms of ozone particles year-round. Bangor secured the fifth spot in the overall ranking, tying for first place in the cleanest metropolitan areas in the United States for ozone. Additionally, Bangor also tied for first place in the category of cleanest metropolitan areas in the country for 24-hour particle pollution.
On the other end of the spectrum, Long Beach, California was ranked as the most polluted city by ozone, while Bakersfield, California took the top spot for worst year-round and short-term particle pollution. The rankings are calculated by the Environmental Protection Agency based on the average levels of particles in each city.
