Bears special teams coordinator Richard Hightower is preparing for the increased number of returns expected due to the new kickoff rule. He anticipates kickers having to make more tackles as a result. Hightower is casting a wide net for a potential kickoff specialist and is considering rookie punter Tory Taylor as a potential option. The Bears are also open to the idea of players at other positions handling kickoffs, similar to how the Chiefs are considering allowing safety Justin Reid to handle kickoffs this season.

Hightower emphasized that anyone with a helmet who can kick off is in play for the role. Special teams coaches across the league are working to determine the best strategies for their teams and how to approach opposing teams on kickoffs. Hightower acknowledged that the new kickoff rule is a challenge that all NFL teams are trying to navigate, and those who are prepared for the changes will have an advantage heading into Week One.
