Becker propels Cardinals to dominate 6-0 victory against Trojans in soccer | News, Sports, Jobs

Fairmont Area had a successful night in girls’ soccer on Tuesday with a 6-0 win against the Worthington Trojans. Kennedy Becker scored three goals and had an assist, while Madi Stromberg earned a shutout in goal. The Cardinals dominated with 28 shots on goal compared to Worthington’s six. Their coach, Matt Nielsen, was pleased with the team’s performance and hopes they can build on this win for future games.

The first goal came from Melia Menth, who scored off of a rebound from Becker’s shot off the crossbar. Karissa Newville then contributed to two goals in a span of 20 seconds to extend the Cardinals’ lead. Stromberg even got in on the action, earning an assist on Becker’s second goal. In the second half, Becker completed her hat trick with two more goals.

The Cardinals’ defense was strong, not allowing a single shot on goal from Worthington. Stromberg made six saves in goal to secure the shutout. The team now has a record of 2-6 and will next play St. Peter in a conference match. Worthington, with a record of 1-6, will host St. James/Windom Area/Madelia for their next game.

In junior varsity action, Fairmont Area defeated Worthington 3-2 with Charli Clow scoring the winning goal. In C-squad action, Fairmont Area won 10-0 with Ingrid Edman, Mckenna Ludacer, Lilo Weber, and Makenzie Gerhardt each scoring two goals.

In boys’ soccer, Fairmont Area lost 7-0 to Worthington, with Jonathan Banegas scoring a hat trick for the Trojans. Fairmont Area only managed six shots on goal, and their goalkeepers Thomas Hamlet and Jonathan Heinze made a combined total of 11 saves. Fairmont Area will next play St. Peter at home.
