Both teams had standout performances in the Bedford-Airport baseball doubleheader on Saturday, with Cade McNamara throwing an impressive game to help the Mules win 5-2 in Game 1, but Airport rallying to win the doubleheader split 9-5 in the nightcap. McNamara led Bedford in the season opener with 4 hits, 2 walks, 1 run, and 6 strikeouts while Nolan Lasky hit four runs in the fifth to put Bedford on top. The second game saw Tommy Huss and Conor Gambino adding two hits each, and Airport’s offense pulling away with seven runs in the second inning, led by Colin Nowak’s four hits.
In other Prep Baseball news, Monroe defeated St. Mary’s Catholic Central with Braden Pierce throwing a no-hitter and the Trojans completing their doubleheader sweep with a 13-9 win in Game 2. Adrian-Milan had a tough doubleheader against Adrian Maddison but remained optimistic, with coach Adam Gil stating that the team had a lot of young talent and it was a good learning experience for the boys.
Prep Softball had a successful day for Bedford at the Jefferson Tournament, winning both games against Wald Lake Western 8-5 and Jefferson 12-7. Meanwhile, Jefferson suffered from errors in both games, leading to their 4-3 record for the day.
In Track and Field, the Carlsons Boys finished runner-up at Saturday’s Woodhaven Metro Classic, with Elizabeth Anderson of Huron dominating the sprint and Emily Petty winning the title in the high jump. Whiteford boys finished second at Saturday’s Hillsdale Jack Beilfuss Invitational with a PB of 16, and the Whiteford women’s team won the SMR relay.
Finally, in Freshman Baseball, Bedford University won twice against St. Francis with Devin Raeburn and Kayson Snyder among the standout players.
