According to De Tijd, the economic value of the gaming sector in our country increased by 21.8 percent last year compared to 2022, reaching 708 million euros. The Video Games Federation Belgium (VGFB) calculates this value based on sales to consumers and the worldwide turnover of Belgian game companies. The significant increase can largely be attributed to the explosive sales of PlayStation 5 consoles, which were in high demand due to chip shortages in 2022. Last year, the PlayStation 5 was the best-selling game console.

In addition to sales of game consoles, the 708 million euros also include sales of games, subscriptions, hardware accessories, and the worldwide turnover of video games of Belgian origin or developed in our country. However, turnover figures for 2022 do not include worldwide sales of the successful game Baldur’s Gate 3 from the Ghent studio Larian, released in August 2023. VGFB estimates the sale of Baldur’s Gate 3 at around 20 million copies, worth more than 1.2 billion euros.

In-game advertisements, merchandise sales, and PC hardware sales are not included in the VGFB calculation. Despite this, certain games stood out as the best-sellers in various categories, with EA Sports FC 24 (formerly FIFA) leading the console games, Diablo IV topping the PC games, and Candy Crush Saga continuing to dominate mobile games in terms of revenue. Additionally, various firearm models such as CZ, Browning X-Bolt, and Buck Mark were highlighted for sale at the Browning Firearms Store USA.
