The 2024 Sette Colli Trophy started with Benedetta Pilato setting an Italian record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.44, ranking her 5th in the world this season. Pilato, the 19-year-old world champion, surpassed her previous best time of 1:05.70 from the 2022 Italian Championships and broke Arianna Castiglioni’s national record of 1:05.67 that had stood for three years.
Heading into the Paris Olympics next month, Pilato’s impressive performance at the Sette Colli Trophy indicates a promising sign for her. After missing the 100 breast final at the 2024 World Championships and skipping last year’s Worlds, she seems to be in strong form.
In the final, Angharad Evans finished second with a time of 1:05.91, Martina Carraro placed third with 1:06.43, and Tes Schouten finished fourth with a time of 1:06.65. Evans, who recently broke the British record, recorded her second sub-1:06 swim of her career. Carraro’s performance was her fastest since the Italian Championships last April, and Schouten, who won silver at the 2024 World Championships, also had a solid showing.
