The Biden administration has recently approved a final rule regarding short-term limited-duration insurance plans. Critics argue that these plans provide cheaper coverage but offer lower quality and reduce consumer protections outlined in the Affordable Care Act. The final rule has passed the review by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget and can be implemented at any time.

The administration’s proposal includes limitations on the length of the initial short-term limited duration contract period, restricting it to no more than three months. Additionally, the maximum coverage period is limited to no more than four months, taking into consideration any renewals or extensions. This change will reduce the current maximum length of short-term coverage available to individuals.
