Biden administration urges Congress to approve release of $4 billion

The Joe Biden administration has requested Congress to release $4 billion for various projects, including the rebuilding of the collapsed bridge in Baltimore and strengthening border capabilities with Mexico. White House Budget Director Shalanda Young wrote a letter to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson outlining the urgent needs and revised estimates for additional funding.

Young highlighted the importance of rebuilding the collapsed bridge in Baltimore, repairing damages in Hawaii caused by fires, and providing aid for hurricanes in the midwestern United States. In addition to the $4 billion request, Young urged Congress to support a bipartisan agreement on border security that includes policy changes, resources, and personnel to secure the borders and reform the immigration system.

The administration also emphasized the need to address the challenges faced by the childcare sector and reduce the costs of child care for working families. Congress previously passed a $95 billion aid plan that included military and economic aid for Ukraine, but the White House accuses Republicans of obstructing immigration reform.

Despite negotiations and efforts to strengthen border controls, the Senate rejected a bill aimed at improving security at the southern border with Mexico. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell criticized the Democrats for putting the bill to a vote again, calling it a “trap” before the elections. The administration continues to push for funding and support to address urgent national needs and strengthen border security.
