Black Maternal Health Advocate, Doula Latham Thomas, Works to Alleviate Maternal Mortality Crisis during Black Maternal Health Week

During Black Maternal Health Week, the focus continues on the ongoing crisis of maternal mortality in the United States. Recent data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene revealed that 51 deaths were associated with pregnancy in 2020. Out of these tragic statistics, 23 were Black women, 13 were Latina, 6 were Asian, and 8 were white. The racial disparities in maternal health outcomes are stark, but there are dedicated individuals working to transform the healthcare system for people of color.

Latham Thomas, a doula and founder of Mama Glow, is one of those individuals striving to provide a path to safer pregnancies. She is committed to improving maternal health and education, with a focus on marginalized communities. In a recent interview, I had the opportunity to speak with Latham about her work and goals in addressing the disparities in maternal healthcare.

As we continue to advocate for better maternal health outcomes, it is crucial to address the systemic issues that contribute to racial disparities in healthcare. Individuals like Latham Thomas are leading the way in creating a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system for all mothers. The conversation around Black Maternal Health Week serves as a reminder of the ongoing work that needs to be done to ensure that every mother receives the care and support she deserves.
