The San Francisco 49ers have renegotiated running back Christian McCaffrey’s contract, which had two years remaining from when he signed with the Carolina Panthers. The new deal is a four-year contract with a new-money average of $19 million per year, surpassing the previous high-water mark of $16 million for the position.
According to a source familiar with the terms, the details of the contract include a signing bonus of $14.29 million, a base salary of $1.21 million for 2024, a per-game roster bonus of $500,000 in 2024, an option bonus of $14.245 million for 2025, with $8.5 million guaranteed at signing and due on April 1, and a base salary of $1.255 million in 2025. Additional bonuses include per-game roster bonuses, offseason workout bonuses, and an option bonus for the 2026 season.
Overall, the four-year contract is worth $62.2 million, with an average of $15.55 million from signing. The new deal includes $24 million in full guarantees, a significant improvement from the previous contract, which had no guarantees at all. This renegotiation comes at a crucial time for McCaffrey, who will turn 28 shortly and is now set to earn close to $20 million, a rare feat for high-end running backs in the league.
