Briton Hinchliffe claims victory in 100m US college championship with a lightning-fast time of 9.95 seconds

British sprinter Louie Hinchliffe has made significant improvements in his 100m time, reducing it by one-third of a second in 2024. Hinchliffe recently made history by becoming the first European to win the men’s 100m at the NCAA Championships. The 21-year-old from Sheffield ran an impressive 9.95 seconds in Eugene, Oregon, to secure the US collegiate title. This achievement has made him the sixth quickest British sprinter and his time ranks as the ninth fastest in the world this year, as well as the best by a European athlete.

Hinchliffe is currently representing the University of Houston, where he is coached by the legendary nine-time Olympic champion, Carl Lewis. Reflecting on his remarkable win, Hinchliffe acknowledged that he pushed himself to the limit to cross the finish line first. Looking ahead, he is scheduled to compete at the UK Championships in Manchester later this month, which serve as the British trials for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Having previously won the English national title in 2022, Hinchliffe spent the 2023 season at Washington State before making the move to Houston to train under Lewis. Despite starting 2024 with a personal best of 10.17, he has steadily improved his performance throughout the year. Just two weeks prior to his NCAA win, Hinchliffe ran a wind-assisted 9.84 in the regionals, showcasing his dedication and determination to excel in the sport.
