Burkina Faso: The overlooked displacement crisis of the world

Burkina Faso has been identified as the world’s most neglected displacement crisis for the second year in a row, according to a report released by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC). The West African nation currently hosts around 2 million displaced people, many of whom are lacking in essential aid and support. This assessment is part of the annual list published by the NRC, which ranks displacement crises based on criteria such as lack of humanitarian funding, media attention, and international political initiatives.

Marine Olivesi, advocacy manager at the Norwegian Refugee Council, highlighted the worsening trends in neglected displacement crises. She emphasized the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations in meeting the increasing needs of affected populations due to limited funds. The lack of adequate funding has hindered efforts to provide essential support to those displaced in countries like Burkina Faso.

In 2023, violence-related deaths in Burkina Faso doubled, reaching over 8,000 fatalities. This escalation in violence has had devastating consequences for the country, with the conflict claiming more lives than in previous years. The NRC’s advocacy efforts underscore the urgent need for international investments to address neglected displacement crises and improve conditions for affected populations.

The decline in international support and media coverage for neglected displacement crises has been attributed to various factors, including restrictions on media freedom in the countries on the list. The ongoing reduction in humanitarian funding has further exacerbated the challenges faced in providing aid to those in need. Marine Olivesi emphasized the importance of diplomatic initiatives and increased funding from donor countries to address the world’s most neglected crises and support those affected by conflict and displacement.
