Business owners report revenue loss as Route 71 bridge remains stuck in upright position.

A broken drawbridge stuck in the up position is causing a decline in revenue along Main Street in two Jersey Shore towns, as reported by local business owners. The Route 71 bridge connecting Avon-by-the-Sea and Belmar has been undergoing repairs for some time now, with the New Jersey Department of Transportation stating that it could take at least another month to complete.

The mayors of both towns recently met with NJDOT officials to discuss the issue, with the goal of having the bridge repaired and operational by Memorial Day Weekend. Store owners along Main Street in both towns have reported a significant drop in sales, ranging from 20% to 45% during certain times. The detour that motorists are forced to take as a result of the bridge closure has diverted traffic away from downtown, impacting foot traffic and overall business.

The mechanical failure of the 92-year-old bridge on March 1 initially caused the bridge to get stuck in the up position, blocking boat traffic. To accommodate marine traffic, crews raised the bridge further, inadvertently causing a complete blockage of Main Street for both pedestrians and vehicles. The lack of passing traffic has been especially noticeable on slower days of the week, affecting businesses in the area.

Despite the challenges faced by local businesses, the NJDOT is working on replacement parts for the bridge and aims to have it operational by Memorial Day as planned. Until then, the detours and lost foot traffic will continue to impact revenue along Main Street in Avon-by-the-Sea and Belmar.
