Businesses in Metro Detroit Taking Action Against Shoplifting

Retailers across the country are taking steps to combat shoplifting, including small businesses like Rail and Anchor in Royal Oak. Julia Manzella, a buyer at Rail and Anchor, noticed declining profits and missing merchandise a few years ago. To address the issue, the small business invested in a security system costing thousands of dollars. They also started sharing photos and videos of shoplifters on social media to catch the thieves.

According to Bloomberg, retail giant Target is also taking action against shoplifting. They reportedly lowered the threshold for confronting shoplifters from $100 to $50. Manzella believes that if big companies like Target start taking a stand, it might help address the problem. However, she emphasizes the importance of local agencies prosecuting repeat offenders to make a significant impact.

Manzella expressed concern about the impact of shoplifting on small businesses like Rail and Anchor. She mentioned that some of her friends had to close their businesses due to this issue. Despite the challenges, she is determined to keep the doors open and run a successful business. Target has not provided any comments in response to inquiries from CBS News Detroit regarding their actions against shoplifting.
