The law gives businesses the option to decide whether or not they want to check IDs, but the ABLE Commission stated that they will continue to enforce the same standards regarding individuals under the age of 21.
Lori Carter from the ABLE Commission expressed that they are not concerned about the impact of the new law, as the commission has never issued a ticket for failure to check an ID. However, the commission will take action if minors are found to be served alcohol. Carter explained that it is now up to business owners to implement and enforce their own policies to ensure compliance with the law and to protect their business and the public.
Despite the change in the law, the ABLE Commission still strongly encourages businesses to check IDs, as undercover checks will continue to be conducted across the state. The new law will go into effect on November 1st, giving businesses time to adjust their practices accordingly to remain in compliance with state regulations.
